KATHMANDU, NEPAL -- Here and now, a moveable feast. Culture flowing through the narrow and dusty streets. One moment you inhale a beautiful waft of curry, the next it is exhaust from a passing motorbike or "tuk-tuk" carrying new trekkers into this mountain paradise. All is beautiful here. It smells of Nepal.

Mist from high in the mountains flows across morning rooftops. People warm to the sunrise. The Monkey Temple sheds its cloak of haze on a distant hill. The smell of burning wood. Of freshly butchered buffalo meat. Of yak cheese. A young puppy screams. He has lost his mother. Next to him a dog lies dead in the mud. Above him a flyer blows in the wind: "Trek Overland to Tibet in Three Weeks."

The expatriot youth of my generation here to absorb the esoteric mysteries of this culture. Yes, all is beautiful here. And it is Nepal. --->>
